Finding the Best Cookie in NYC

Finding the Best Cookie in NYC

It seems like every few months I have a new favorite dessert, and in these past few months that dessert has become none other than the ultimate classic: Cookies. I love a good cookie and know that there are some places in New York people swear have the best cookies. I decided to try all these places and decide which of them, in my opinion, really has the best cookies! My favorite type of cookies are chocolate chip and funfetti, so that's what I'm going to attempt to get and try from each place I go to!

One of the four places people rave about I've already been to, so I'm going to give my input right off the bat and use it as a starting point to judge our first stop on! This place is a shop called Shmackeries! It's pretty well known in New York and I went there to try out their funfetti and chocolate chip last year! The cookies here are pretty big and fairly sweet, so I must admit it was hard to finish a whole one, and I personally like eating all of my cookie! I'm going to call this the Finishing Factor, on top of taste, texture, and presentation, i'm going to judge these cookies on their finishing factor! The confetti and Shmackeries was very sweet and even had frosting on it which was great for my little sweet tooth. On the other hand their chocolate chip cookie didn't really do anything for me, it was pretty plain and not all that memorable. Presentation wise these cookies look pretty cool since they're so big and most have frosting! Texture wise I will say they were a bit hard. I like my cookies to have a bite to them for sure, but these could've been a bit softer for me. Below is how I'm going to easily judge the cookies, first out of 5, then 20!

Shmackeries:

Funfetti

  • Taste 3.5/5
  • Texture 3/5
  • Presentation 5/5
  • Finishing Factor 2.5/5

Chocolate Chip

  • Taste 2/5
  • Texture 2.5/5
  • Presentation 3.5/5
  • Finishing Factor 3/5

Overall the confetti was a 14 out of a possible 20, and the chocolate chip was a 11/20 so definitely not my favorite cookies, sorry! These guys were just a bit too sweet (or in mr chocolate chips case too boring) for me, which is saying a lot cause I can handle a good amount of sweet!

Next up on our list is a bakery that specializes in a lot more than just cookies, but I've heard a lot of amazing things about their cookies non the less! This place is non other than Milk Bar! While I'm here you bet your ass I'm also getting some cake and crack pie and maybe even soft serve. WHO KNOWS, I'm excited.

They don't have a plain chocolate chip cookie so I went for one their most famous cookies instead-the compost cookie, which is just a big hodge podge of a bunch of things. The presentation of these was pretty plain but reminded me of a childs brown paper bagged lunch, which is cute but not the prettiest. Texture wise, both cookies were a little too chewy for my taste although the confetti was a little softer. These cookies both smelled like something I've smelled before, the confetti was serving some Pillsbury cookie dough realness, but with the compost cookie I couldn't figure out what it was! Taste wise while they were both good and definitely tasted like something I've had in my childhood before, they weren't the best cookies I've had. The compost first tasted like butterbeer but after it left a strong coffee after taste that I wasn't a fan of. :/

Milk Bar:

Confetti

  • Taste 3/5
  • Texture 2.5/5
  • Presentation 3/5
  • Finishing Factor 4.5/5

Compost Cookie

  • Taste 3/5
  • Texture 2/5
  • Presentation 2.5/5
  • Finishing Factor 3/5

Overall the Confetti gets a 13.5/20 and the Compost gets a 10.5/20 from me. I'm a little disappointed in Milk Bar not gonna lie! But their whole thing is Nostalgia, and it definitely deserves a 10/10 for that!

Next stop is another shop I'm excited for. Chip! They have different specials everyday so I had to check and make sure they had my funfetti and a plain chocolate chip, and they did! These were some great cookies. The texture was perfect, slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The chocolate chip wasn't my favorite but the funfetti??? The best one I've ever had, I swear! These cookies also smelled SO. GOOD.

Chip:

Chocolate Chip

  • Taste 3.5/5
  • Texture 4/5
  • Presentation 4.5/5
  • Finishing Factor 3/5

Overall these chocolate chip cookies get a 15/20 from me. Good, but not my favorite chocolate chip cookie.

Funfetti

  • Taste 5/5
  • Texture 5/5
  • Presentation 5/5
  • Finishing Factor 5/5

The funfetti gets a 20/20 from me, I loved this cookie so much. It's by far my favorite funfetti cookie I've ever had! It tasted like a giant rainbow sprinkleeee. This cookie was also dangerously addicting!

Before I move on to my last place, I actually got to try another cookie people say are some of the best in New York out of no where. These were cookies from a coffee shop called Culture Espresso. I shared one as a snack and was super surprised by it. It was an amazing chocolate chip cookie! Crunchy and caramelized edges and slightly soft in the middle. The only thing I didn't love about it was how chocolatey it was. If there had been a different chocolate in it it would have been even more amazing. So here's a surprise extra review!

Culture Espresso:

Chocolate Chip

  • Taste 4.5/5
  • Texture 4/5
  • Presentation 4/5
  • Finishing Factor 4.5/5

Overall this surprisingly good unexpected find gets a 17/20 !

Ok, last stop is a place so many people say has the BEST cookie in NY, Levain Bakery. They didn't have any funfetti so I tried a chocolate peanut butter chip instead cause why not. Though the peanut butter chip was good, the classic chocolate chip walnut was definitely better. If it weren't for the walnuts it would be the best chocolate chip cookie for sure. Texture was perfect, the inside was almost like cookie dough. And nothing (except those darn nuts) stood out to much. It was a great cookie.

Levain:

Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip

  • Taste 3.5/5
  • Texture 4.5/5
  • Presentation 3.5/5
  • Finishing Factor 4.5/5

This random "not a funfetti but I love cookies so I got another flavor to judge anyway" cookie gets a 16/20. Pretty good but not my favorite

Chocolate Chip Walnut

  • Taste 4.5/5
  • Texture 5/5
  • Presentation 5/5
  • Finishing Factor 5/5

This guy gets a 19.5/20. Would've been a 20/20 if it weren't for those meddling walnuts!

So the best cookie in NYC? Well, if we're talking Funfetti, Chip is the way to go. It also was jut my favorite cookie overall and one I'd definitely go get again! For Chocolate Chip? I think it's gotta go to Levain BUT Culture Espresso is a close second. Both cookies had aspects that, if just slightly different, would've made them 10x better for me, but they were still both great cookies. And so ends my cookie hunt! Hopefully you enjoyed this way too long post and you're thinking of trying some for yourself one day! This was pretty fun so the second my favorite dessert changes you better believe I'll be searching for the best of it wherever I am!
